The Wave crib grew into a full-size bed

The Wave crib is the one people recognize from across a nursery: the curved rails, the wide stance, the shape that made a crib look like furniture. On September 16 Nestig listed the same idea at full size. The Wave Full Bed is a Montessori floor bed first and a standard full bed later, and it is built to be the last bed you buy for the room.

How it grows

It starts on the floor. As a floor bed it is 76.7 inches long, 54 wide and 26.2 inches high, which is low enough for a toddler to climb in and out of without help and the reason a Montessori bed exists. When the kid is ready, the same frame goes up on legs to a standard 35.4 inches, with 9.4 inches of clearance underneath and the mattress platform at 11.57 inches. It takes a standard full mattress, sold separately, and Nestig sells its own if you want one box. Assembly is two people and about 40 minutes, by the brand's own estimate.

It is solid Brazilian pine, handmade in Brazil like the rest of the line, and it comes in natural wood or walnut. The price is $1,099 in either finish.

Why the size matters

Most floor beds are twins, and a twin is the bed you replace at eight. A full is the bed that is still the right size at fourteen, which is the argument for spending more once instead of twice. It is also why the room has to be measured before the cart: at 77 by 54 inches this is a real piece of furniture, and in a small second bedroom it is most of the floor.

Who should buy it

Get it if your toddler is already sleeping on the floor, or about to, and you would rather make one furniture decision than two. Get the walnut if the room is going to be a teenager's someday; the natural reads younger. Skip it if you are still in the crib phase. The Wave crib converts to a toddler bed on its own, and there are years between that and this. And skip it if the room is small: a twin floor bed leaves you the space to actually play.
