Guide
Gifts for 2 year olds

Buy something that moves, something that stacks and something that carries other things around. That is the whole brief at two, and the nine below cost $20 to $132. The test is not whether the toy is clever, it is whether it survives being dragged into the kitchen at 6:15 a.m. and then abandoned face down for a week, and most of the expensive ones do not.
The ones that move
The Little Tikes Cozy Coupe is $64.99, listed for 18 months to 5 years, and still made in the USA. It is the correct answer for a child who wants to be in charge of something, and the floor-powered design means no battery and no charger. The Kinderfeets 2-in-1 Tiny Tot PLUS is $109.95 and starts as a trike, then drops the back wheel and becomes a balance bike when they are ready. Kinderfeets lists it for 18 months to 4 years, with a seat that climbs from 10 to 13 inches and a 55-pound limit, which is the detail worth paying for: it is two gifts in one box, two years apart.
The ones that stack
Tender Leaf Toys makes the Stacking Coral Reef, $49.99, listed for 18 months and up. It is a wooden reef with fish and crabs that balance off it, and it fails loudly and satisfyingly, which is most of the appeal at this age. From the same brand, Stacking Cars are $31.99 and listed for 18 months and up: a wooden transporter and five small cars, and the cars go on to live in every coat pocket you own.

The ones that cost less than a round of coffee
Melissa & Doug’s Blockables Space Play Set is $21.99 and printed on the page as 2 and up: a rocket and a rover that come apart into chunky blocks and go back together wrong, which is the point. Manhattan Toy’s Click Clack Colorpop is $20, a ball of twistable handles around a bead rattle. Its product page does not list an age, so treat it as the car-seat toy rather than the birthday gift. Manhattan Toy’s Love, Stella Playday Wagon is $50 and tagged for 18 months and up, and it is the carrying-things answer: a doll wagon on a pull string that will spend its life full of rocks.
The two with an asterisk
Magna-Tiles Dino World is $79.99 for 40 pieces and four dinosaur figurines, and Magna-Tiles lists it for 3 and up. Plenty of two-year-olds get one anyway. Just know that you are buying ahead, and that the age on the box is about the small parts, not about the magnets. Lovevery Play Kits are $132 each, shipped every three months, and the bands that cover this year are The Companion at 22 to 24 months, The Helper at 25 to 27, The Enthusiast at 28 to 30, The Researcher at 31 to 33 and The Free Spirit at 34 to 36. It is the most money on this list and the least surprise, which is either the best or the worst thing about it depending on who is unwrapping it.

Every price and every age above was read this morning on the brand’s own product page or product feed. Ages are the brand’s own, not ours. Prices are direct from the brand and exclude shipping. The one gap we found: Manhattan Toy’s Click Clack Colorpop page lists no recommended age at all.
Questions parents ask
What is a good gift for a 2 year old? Something they can move, carry or knock over. A ride-on, a stacking toy or a pull-along wagon will all out-play a toy that does something clever on its own.
Are Magna-Tiles good for 2 year olds? Magna-Tiles lists its sets for ages 3 and up, including the $79.99 Dino World set. Buy them for a two-year-old knowing that, and with supervision.
How much should you spend on a 2 year old? This list runs $20 to $132, and the $20 and $21.99 picks get as much use as anything above them. Spend the money on the thing with wheels.
What about a balance bike at two? It works if the seat drops low enough. The Kinderfeets Tiny Tot PLUS starts at a 10-inch seat and is listed from 18 months, so it is early-usable rather than aspirational.
The verdict
One gift, one child, buy the Cozy Coupe at $64.99. It is the only thing here that still gets used at four. If the hallway cannot take a car, buy the Stacking Coral Reef at $49.99 instead. For a gift that has to arrive in an envelope, the Lovevery kit does that job and nothing else on this list does. And if you are buying for a birthday party where eleven other people are also buying, bring the $21.99 Blockables and keep your powder dry for Christmas.
